Candle Safety:

Ø      Never leave a burning candle unattended!

Ø      Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep.

Ø      Keep burning candles away from children and pets.

Ø      Do not place near flammable objects such as curtains, furniture, bedding, etc.

Ø      Place on a protected, heat resistant, level surface designed for candle use.

Ø      Avoid burning candles in drafts to prevent rapid, uneven burning. Keep candle free of wick trimmings, matches, or other foreign matter that could be a fire hazard.

Ø      Avoid burning candles in drafts to prevent rapid, uneven burning.

Ø      Avoid walking with lit candles.

Ø      Keep wick trimmed to 1/4 inch at all times to avoid carbon build up on the wick (mushrooming), dark smoking, and soot in the air and on walls or furniture.

Ø      Allow candle to cool before trimming wick or relighting.

Ø      Do not burn a candle in a container that is chipped or cracked.

Ø      Do not allow candle to burn completely down to the bottom of container, stop about 1/2 inch short.

Ø      Do not allow flame to touch sides of container.

Ø      Allow candle to cool before replacing lid on jar.

Ø      All candles will produce some smoke and soot, but proper burning (keeping wick trimmed and avoiding drafts, etc.) will help eliminate this problem.

Helpful Tips:

Ø      Burn container candles 1 hour for each inch of its diameter.  This allows the flame time to melt the wax to the outer edge.  Burning less time will cause the candle to core burn down the middle & shorten burn time.  Example: a 3" wide candle should be burned for 3 hours at a time.

Ø      Use toenail clippers or long handled wick trimmers to trim wicks in jars where scissors won't fit.

Ø      Candles will fade if left in direct sunlight or spotlights for extended periods of time.

Ø      Before a party, light and extinguish candles.  They will light more quickly and easily later.

Ø      To extinguish a candle, use a candle snuffer, or hold fingers in front of the flame and blow.  This will prevent hot wax from splattering on furniture.

Problem Solving:

Ø      Crooked burning:  If wick moves off center, use a butter knife to gently push it back to center.  If there is a draft, rotating the candle can help.

Ø      If soot builds up inside container, wipe clean with a paper towel.

Ø      To remove wax from washable fabrics, scrape off excess wax and run boiling or hot tap water through the material.

Ø      To minimize candle flickering, trim the wick to 1/4 inch before lighting, and place burning candles away from vents, drafts and other strong air currents.

Candle Storage and Use

Ø      Always store candles in a cool, dark and dry place.

Ø      To prevent fading, never expose candles to light for an extended period of time. Never put candles in a window or directly expose to bright outdoor light or indoor spotlights.

Ø      Consumers should know that the minuscule amount of soot produced by all candles is similar to that given off by toasters and cooking oils in the kitchen, and does not present a health concern.
